Not too long ago I was in an outpatient program for opiate addiction. It had been my third time in rehab. I was addicted to prescription pain pills (Percocet, Vicodin, Methadone, etc.)
We were required in this treatment program to urine test twice a week. Opiates will stay in your urine for four days at the most. I hadn’t used any opiates in quite a while so I wasn’t worried at all about a positive test.
Every time I’d take a urine test it would show up positive for Morphine. I didn’t know what the hell was going on, I couldn’t figure it out. Why did my urine keep testing positive for Morphine?
The counselors in the rehab called me at work on a conference call. They thought maybe I was lying to them and had been using because of the positive test for Morphine. I was perfectly honest with them and said no I haven’t been using Morphine. They said they believed me but it was a hard pill for them to swallow knowing I was an opiate addict.
I told them that I had been taking Naltrexone which had been prescribed by my psychiatrist. Naltrexone is a drug that blocks the opiate receptors in the brain. If you take opiates while on Naltrexone you won’t feel the effects so there is no point in doing them. This would give me a psychological edge against the drug, especially since I was going places where the drug was readily available. If I can’t feel the effects off opiates while on Naltrexone what’s the point? Naltrexone also helps minimize the opiate cravings too. It also works for alcohol and it’s similar to Vivitrol.
The counselors at the rehab figured that Naltrexone was what was causing my test to turn positive for opiates so they left it alone and never brought it up again. I was still puzzled. Deep down inside I didn’t think it was the Naltrexone causing the positive Morphine test.
Poppy Seed Drug Test
People in rehab had told me in the past about the poppy seed drug test, that poppy seeds in bagels will create a positive test for opiates in urine. I started thinking too myself, was there anything I was eating with poppy seeds in them?
I was eating Onion Bagels every morning from Noah’s Bagels before going to my inpatient program but those were Onion Bagels, not Poppy Seed Bagels.
I decided to take a closer look in my morning Onion Bagels and I eventually noticed the poppy seeds inside them. You couldn’t see them on the outside of the bagel, they were inside. I wish I had known poppy seeds were in Noah’s Onion Bagels ahead of time, it would of saved me a lot of grief. I stopped eating onion bagels from Noah’s and what do you know, I stopped testing positive for Morphine.
The moral to the story is, if you don’t want to test positive for Morphine in a drug test, make sure you aren’t eating anything with poppy seeds in it because it will show up as Morphine. That’s the notorious poppy seed drug test.
