It says in the “Doctors Opinion” in the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous that we Alcoholics suffer from a mental obsession and a physical allergy to alcohol. The alcoholics defense against the physical part is to refrain from drinking but if they decide to drink the alcohol they are in big trouble.
The mental disease is activated with the physical allergy and now the cravings are on. After the first drink it’s almost nearly impossible to stop. The alcoholic can try to hold on by sheer will power but the warped thinking doesn’t stop. The alcoholics doesn’t care or think about the consequences of starting back up again. The obsession begins and all the alcoholic can think about is taking the next drink.
As alcoholics we have a negative voice inside of our head that we have to fight on a daily basis. We can’t deal with it unless we go to God. For many, this is hard to do and figure out.
If you refrained from alcohol for a while and have done spiritual work the obsession to drink can be removed but if you decide to take a drink, you will be obsessively thinking about taking another one and you will not feel content until you actually do. An alcoholic listening to their thoughts and believing them is poison. They actively need the help of God and the fellowship if they are to live happy, joyous, and free.
Many alcoholics can’t take the warped thinking and after a while give up and end up in hospitals, institutions, or jails. This truly is a disease of dysfunctional thinking that lives in an alcoholics mind set out to destroy them. For some, it’s either the program of recovery, misery, or death.
We are all created in God’s image and God’s will for us is to be happy, joyous, and free. If you are truly an alcoholic and your life is important to you, become willing to accept a power greater than yourself to help you and try to talk to something other than yourself because if we talk to our warped selves we are in trouble.
